12 - Gravity's Patient

Honor knew the air was wrong before she even opened her eyes. It didn’t taste right. The space she was in was silent, it didn’t carry the ever-present hum of life support. Just a total stillness. A deep, unnatural absence that made her think she was dead.

She forced her eyelids apart. The lighting was low, soft and diffused, nothing like the harsh LEDs of the habitat. No flicker. No pulse. Just steady, golden illumination that seemed to come from the walls themselves. She tried to move, and was rewarded with pain along her whole body. She pushed through it, moving her limbs a little, wiggling her toes, making sure everything worked. She had a brief remembrance of crushing acceleration, suspension fluid locking up her body.

The room came into focus. White ceilings. Pale walls. A window, actual glass, showing a sliver of blue sky and something green moving beyond it. Honor’s breath hitched. Trees?
